Week 11: Extra Credit Reading Guru Nanak Amar Chitra Katha

Guru Nanak. Source: Sentinal Assam.
The story of Guru Nanak and the gurus that precede him define what it means to be a Sikh. This story is incredible in that it defines equality, demonstrates happiness, and embodies a love to God. However, Sikhs consider their beliefs a religion. While Guru Nanak preached of no religion but simple being men of God, people turned this into a religion. While he preached of equality, there is hate that sits in the world. It is interesting to see such conflict, but even more concerning what our great leaders and Gods would say if they came back to Earth to tell us all how disappointed they may be. It is our own duty to be good citizens and have pure hearts.

  1. Simran,
I think I may have to take your lead and read the story of Guru Nanak. I have been curious about what exactly defines a Sikh, where their origin is found, and how it plays into the idea of lifestyle and/or religion. I have often heard that it is a way of life and not a proclamation to worship a particular deity. Of course, I have heard this of Hinduism as well. I often feel like the term “religion” needs to be defined preconceived conversation, because many people seem to have a subjective definition of what it is.
