Week 6 Reading Notes: Narayan's Mahabharata Part A

Pandava brothers and Draupadi. Source: Wikipedia
The beginning story of Dhritarashthra, Pandu, and Vidura was one of extreme interest. I had heard, read, and watched the Mahabharata in pieces, so I had never read the beginning of the three brothers. This was such an interesting story. The beginning of how the fisherman's daughter became a part of the kingdom and the fisherman himself was Bhisma. The story of how the brothers came about was interesting and explains why Dhritarashthra was blind. His back story was interesting along with the relationships of the three brothers. This first chapter had many complex stories within one. The chronological order of these stories is essential to setting the background of the Mahabharata. The specific episode of the three wives and the rishi giving birth to the three brothers was one that stood out to me. It was a short story that provided an ample amount of information. Each woman provided an important aspect to the brothers born. The rishi also had a huge impact on the result of these brothers. This makes understanding the relationship between the Kurus much more evident.
